Thank you for contacting the Governor’s Office to provide us with your suggestion for the California budget. Suggestions from the people of California will help Governor Brown make the most informed decisions for our state.

On January 10th, Governor Brown proposed a budget that applies a comprehensive and balanced approach to California’s financial crisis, but there is still a long road ahead of us.

These cuts will be painful, requiring sacrifice from every sector of the state, but we have no choice. We must return California to fiscal responsibility and get our state on the road to economic recovery and job growth.

Thank you again for your advice.

Sincerely,

Office of Constituent Affairs

Thank you for writing to share your thoughts on alternative energy. I always appreciate hearing from people who are actively engaged in the future of our great state.

From the early days when Silicon Valley pioneered the computer revolution to our recent Million Solar Roofs Plan - California has an impressive legacy of being at the forefront of innovation. As our great state moves forward, we need this legacy of innovation to meet our long-term energy and climate change goals. We cannot continue to rely on conventional greenhouse gas-producing energy sources; clean renewable energy is California's future.

Investing in clean and renewable sources of energy will help combat climate change, ensure a healthier environment for our children and build a more prosperous future for our state. It will also create new economic markets and increase job opportunities. Through our solar initiative alone, we will produce enough clean energy to power one million homes, reduce emissions by 3 million tons and promote California's solar industry.

Recently, I called for an acceleration of our Renewable Portfolio Standard - increasing the state's goal of having 20 percent of our electricity come from renewable energy by 2010 to 33 percent by 2020. We also established a grant program to promote renewable energy and ensure our universities and research institutions have the resources they need.

With our legacy of innovation, I know this is just the beginning. Again, thank you for writing to me on this important issue."

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger

"Dear Mr. Fisher, MSW:

Thank you for writing to express your support for expanding the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as a transportation fuel. I appreciate hearing your thoughts, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.

I share your concern about the rising cost of gasoline, and I agree that we must take steps to reduce our dependence on oil and increase our energy security. Putting more CNG vehicles on the road and investing in the infrastructure to make CNG fuel accessible for drivers may help us achieve that goal.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the consumption of CNG nationwide has risen by 145 percent over the past six years, increasing the demand for CNG fueling stations.

There are currently 150,000 CNG vehicles on the road nationwide but fewer than 1,000 CNG fueling stations in the United States.

California leads the nation with more than 33,000 CNG vehicles and nearly 150 public fueling sites.

You may also be interested to know that the California Energy Commission has provided more than $4 million to build an additional 40 CNG fueling stations and purchase more than 350 CNG school buses for the State.

Please know that I appreciate hearing your support for using CNG as a transportation fuel and will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider legislation to address this issue.

I will also continue working to advance measures that will diversify our energy supply and increase our energy independence.

Again, thank you for your letter. If you have further questions or comments, please contact my office in Washington, D.C. at (202) 224-3841. Best regards"

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

"Dear Mr. Fisher:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for legislation to limit bank fees. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

I understand your concern that a number of banks impose confusing policies and service fees. During this severe economic crisis, new and increased fees, especially those that consumers may not be aware of, can have a devastating effect on families. These increasing fees can cause consumers to fall into debt much more quickly than they expected. Please know that I am very concerned about the increasing amount of debt held by Americans and the role that some banks have played in exacerbating the situation.

On March 12, 2009, Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) introduced the "Consumer Overdraft Protection Fair Practices Act" (H.R. 1456). This legislation would limit overdraft protection services unless consumers agreed upfront to pay for the fees associated with them. Similar legislation has yet to be introduced in the Senate. Please know that I will keep your support in mind should this legislation, or other legislation to regulate bank fees, come before the Senate.

Dear Mr. Fisher:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the safety of our country's nuclear power plants.  As Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), which has jurisdiction over domestic nuclear regulatory activities, I appreciate hearing from you on this vitally important issue.

Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the subsequent damage and failure of nuclear reactors in that country, I called on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to conduct an immediate, comprehensive review of the safety of all nuclear power plants in the United States.  I also convened an EPW hearing to review the Japanese nuclear emergency and its implications for nuclear safety in the United States.

It is critically important to thoroughly examine all plants subject to significant seismic activity or located near a coastline (notably California's San Onofre and Diablo Canyon plants), the 54 plants that were licensed prior to 1980, and those plants licensed after 1980 that share significant characteristics with the compromised reactors in Japan.  That is why I have also asked the NRC to respond to specific questions about plant design and operations, type of reactor, and preparedness to withstand an earthquake or tsunami.  I also believe that before there is any license renewal granted in California, all in-depth earthquake and tsunami studies must be completed.

I am pleased to report that the NRC recently issued inspection reports on all 104 U.S. nuclear power reactors and will continue its oversight process to ensure that these facilities are up to code and comply with all public health and safety regulations.

Again, thank you for writing to me.  Be assured that I will keep working to protect the health and safety of the American public.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator
